The Kassø Power-to-X (PtX) plant in Southern Denmark has been honored with the prestigious 6 WhoGreen Stars for its pioneering efforts in producing green methanol.
The “Green Globe with 6-stars” Award is given within the category of renewable energy.
Developed by European Energy, the facility exemplifies a scalable solution for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, such as maritime shipping and heavy industry.
In March 2025, the first batch of raw e-methanol was produced at the plant, marking a significant milestone in the project. The Kassø facility is inaugurated in May 2025. European Energy and Mitsui owns and operates the Kassø Power-to-X facility.
The Kassø Power-to-X (PtX) facility stands as one of the world’s largest commercial plants dedicated to producing sustainable e-methanol, with an impressive capacity of up to 42,000 tons of e-methanol annually. This cutting-edge facility plays a crucial role in advancing the global green energy transition by providing a clean alternative to fossil fuels. The e-methanol produced at the Kassø plant is designed to decarbonize industries that are traditionally challenging to electrify, including shipping, plastic production, and aviation.
Noteworthy off-takers of the green fuel include A.P. Moller – Maersk, Novo Nordisk, and LEGO Group—all industry leaders committed to reducing their carbon footprints and fostering sustainable business practices. By integrating e-methanol into their operations, these forward-thinking companies are not only helping to drive the clean energy revolution but also setting an inspiring example for others in their industries.
