In 2025, as the world raced to cut carbon emissions, one of the most powerful signals of progress came not from the skies or land—but from the sea.
At the WhoGreen Global Stars Awards, a symbol of excellence in sustainability, A.P. Moller – Maersk was honored with the prestigious 4 WhoGreen Stars for their bold transformation of global shipping through the use of green methanol.
The “Fine Daisy with 4-stars” Award is given within the category of transport.
Why? Because Maersk is doing more than talking about decarbonization, they’re doing it at ocean scale.
Meet the Future: Maersk’s Green Fleet
At the heart of this transformation is a powerful new generation of vessels—methanol-enabled container ships—led by the trailblazing Ane Maersk.
Powered by e-methanol, a clean fuel made from renewable electricity and captured CO₂, these ships produce dramatically lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuels.
Every day, a ship like Ane Maersk consumes around 120 tons of green methanol, enabling it to travel over 740 km per day, or 6000+ km on a full tank of 1000 tons.
But here’s the challenge: even one of the world’s largest e-methanol production facilities—the Kassø Power-to-X plant in Denmark—can only produce 42,000 tons annually, barely enough to fuel a single ship like Ane Maersk for one year.
