Imagine a summer day in Northern Jutland. The wind drifts gently over the golden fields of grain, and on the horizon stands a building—modern, yet timeless. It looks like a contemporary take on an ancient bread oven: clean lines, warm materials, and full of life. This is Kornets Hus—The House of Grain—which opened its doors for the first time in July 2021, right in the middle of a time when the world longed for connection, learning, and care.
It All Started With a Visionary
Behind the idea was Jørn Ussing Larsen, founder of the organic mill Aurion. After decades of working with ancient grains, flavors, and baking, he had a bigger dream: to create a place where people could learn about the journey of grain from soil to table. Alongside Hjørring Municipality and with support from Realdania and The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities, The House of Grain Association was established—and the dream began to take shape.
A Sustainable Beacon in the Landscape
The award-winning Norwegian architecture firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter was chosen to design the building—its first project in Denmark. What they created is already seen as a modern classic: a functional and striking building that draws on Nordic tradition and aesthetic values. Built using glulam timber and brick, Kornets Hus is a tangible example of how architecture and sustainability can blend beautifully.
